Tu Do Street

Little lacquered children
Gaily jumping rope
Pigtails flying

An enigma—
	Almond eyes and western games

Are there lessons
You could teach us
	Almond eyes with western games?

pretty schmaltzy, though i agree with the broad strokes of the narrative. reference to Michael Moore and the 'separation barrier'/'apartheid wall' doesn't seem current....

hey nice post man. kind of a ridiculous scene you described, but theres some really powerful ideas at work in that town it looks like. Communities like the one you described seem like they're growing more and more. I caught a sense of it when I was at Hebrew University. I wonder what the appeal is to live like that? You have to react pretty strongly to things you've experienced to pick up and move into such a rigid and isolated society. The guy with the Brooklyn accent didn't sound like he was a unique example. What do you think makes people so disgusted that they feel thats the only way to live their life? 21st century America? Do you have any thoughts on that?

Although I'm not Jewish, I also found the post to be painfully 'Western'. I found the extent to which the author didn't seem to have any respect for these peoples' values offensive and kind of embarrassing. Just because you choose not to live like them or understand them doesn't mean that you should disrespect them. You're on their turf and in their community, therefore you should play by their rules. When I was in Israel, I visited Mea Shearim in very modest clothing and yet upon seeing the signs at the entrances of the communities I decided not to enter as it is obvious they do not want to be disturbed. My curiosity to see them is definitely less important than their desire to live their lives the way they see fit. That it didn't seem to occur to the author that he was being culturally insensitive is strange to me.
